Designing the Survey

The survey instrument that will be used in the online survey will consists of 4 parts:

  Part 1.  Demographic
This section will assess the demographic, ethnic, generational, and relational information related to the leaders and members of English-speaking Asian American churches in California.
  Part 2.  Acculturation
This section will assess the degree of acculturation experienced by members of Asian American churches, which will then be correlated with the organizational and Christian leadership qualities that they look for in their church leaders.
  Part 3.  Organizational Leadership
This section will assess the degree to which Asian Americans look for specific types of attributes, behaviors, managerial styles, and leadership outcomes from their church leaders.
  Part 4.  Christian Leadership
This section will assess the degree to which Asian Americans look for specific types of biblical and Christian leadership attributes, behaviors, beliefs, and values in church leaders.

The development of the survey questions was based on the following:

Part 1 was based on demographic questions included in the US Census 2010, as well as other general information questions.

Parts 2 and 3 were based on current theories, research methods, and survey instruments used in studying acculturation and transformational/organizational leadership.

Part 4 was based on focus group discussions that identified key biblical and Christian leadership values that were considered desirable by Asian American Christian leaders and scholars.

The leaders and members from each participating church will be invited to take the online survey, which can be completed in about 20-30 minutes.  All individual responses received in the online survey will be anonymous and confidential.

The ideal size for the number of participating churches is between 10-20 churches, which would represent 10-20% of the number of Asian American churches in California.  The ideal size for the total number of participants in this survey is between 250-400 individuals.  More responses are of course beneficial, but this target size would provide sufficient data for the data analysis.

The exact dates for the online survey will be confirmed shortly, but as currently planned,
the online survey will be available for participants from March 16 - April 8, 2011.

All surveys received by April 8 , 2011, will be included in the initial data analysis. Surveys received after our initial analysis has been completed, will be incorporated into future revisions of the study.
